BRS MLC K. Kavitha’s newly floated political outfit, Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS), has formally approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking official recognition under the proposed party name.
In a letter addressed to the Commission, the party’s General Secretary, Anil Kumar, requested that the ECI provide copies of the nearly 1,000 objections reportedly filed against the party’s registration. He argued that it would be difficult for the party to submit a meaningful response without first being given access to the objections.
The letter also contended that asking the party to change its name at this stage would be unfair, as it had already begun organizational activities and hoisted party flags in over 100 Assembly constituencies using the name initially accepted during the registration process.
The party further questioned why objections had been raised against the proposed name when, according to its representation, the Election Commission had previously recognized multiple political parties with similar names. It requested adequate time to study the objections and submit a detailed reply before any personal hearing is conducted.
Citing Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the party urged the Election Commission to examine its application on merit and grant recognition in accordance with the law.
Political observers believe the proposed name carries significant symbolic value. Since the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was earlier known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), some analysts feel the name “Telangana Rakshana Sena” could resonate with sections of the electorate by invoking memories of the Telangana statehood movement. However, this remains a matter of political interpretation.
Earlier, Kavitha had approached the court challenging the Election Commission’s handling of the matter. The court, however, declined to intervene at this stage, observing that the Commission should be allowed to complete its statutory process. It also clarified that the petitioner could seek legal remedies later if dissatisfied with the Commission’s final decision.
The Election Commission is yet to announce its decision on the party’s application, and the outcome is expected to be closely watched in Telangana’s political circles.
