Although the Telangana statehood movement concluded years ago, its political and emotional significance continues to resurface in public discourse. Regional identity remains a sensitive issue, with leaders occasionally invoking it during political debates.
The latest discussion was sparked by BRS MLC K. Kavitha, who made remarks about employment opportunities in Hyderabad. She said that while students from Telangana are not moving to Andhra Pradesh for education or jobs, many students from Andhra Pradesh continue to come to Hyderabad for employment. She further suggested that priority should be given to Telangana youth in job opportunities, a statement that quickly triggered widespread debate on social media.
Her comments drew mixed reactions, with critics arguing that they could fuel regional divisions, while supporters viewed them as a call to safeguard employment opportunities for local youth.
Amid the controversy, Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh shared a message highlighting his government’s approach toward investment and employment. Responding to a social media discussion on the issue, Lokesh stressed that Andhra Pradesh welcomes talent irrespective of regional background.
“This is exactly the Andhra Pradesh we’re building. A state where talent matters more than geography. We don’t ask where you’re from. We ask what you can build.
Be proud of your roots. But never let state borders limit opportunity. Andhra Pradesh isn’t defined by where you’re from. It’s defined by what we build together,” Lokesh wrote.
His statement has been widely interpreted as promoting an inclusive investment and employment ecosystem, emphasizing that opportunities should be based on merit, skills, and innovation rather than regional identity.
The contrasting remarks from Kavitha and Lokesh have reignited discussions over regional identity versus merit-based opportunities, with the debate continuing to generate considerable attention across political and social media circles.
