M. S. Raju on Rajamouli vs Neel Debate: “No One Replaces Anyone”

Producer-director M. S. Raju has said that comparisons between S. S. Rajamouli and Prashanth Neel are unnecessary, amid ongoing social media debates suggesting that the Kannada filmmaker is emerging as a new favourite among Telugu stars.

Raju stated that every filmmaker has their own stature and creative identity, and that it is unfair to suggest one director is replacing another. He added that Rajamouli has already built an “enviable body of work” that, according to him, remains unmatched in Indian cinema.

At the same time, he acknowledged Prashanth Neel’s growing popularity, especially after the buzz surrounding Dragon. He described Neel as a passionate filmmaker who understands how to craft pan-India films with stars who enjoy massive fan followings. He also pointed out that the idea of categorising directors strictly as Telugu or Kannada filmmakers is becoming increasingly irrelevant in today’s pan-India cinema landscape.

Both Rajamouli and Neel have delivered major blockbusters. While Rajamouli reached global recognition with Baahubali and RRR, Neel made a strong impact with the KGF franchise and Salaar. According to Raju, Neel’s strong hero-centric storytelling approach is one of the reasons many Telugu stars are eager to collaborate with him.

Writer Kona Venkat also responded to the ongoing comparisons, criticising the negativity on social media. He said attempts to undermine Rajamouli are unfair and reiterated that the filmmaker continues to set new benchmarks for Indian cinema. He further noted that Rajamouli’s upcoming project with Mahesh Babu is already being seen as one of the most ambitious films in the country.

Discussing the broader pan-India trend, M. S. Raju said Telugu cinema still holds strong global potential, pointing to films like Karthikeya 2 and HanuMan as examples of content-driven success that transcends language barriers. He also expressed confidence that his upcoming mystical devotional horror thriller Agadha would connect with audiences across India.
