Director Puri Jagannadh recently spoke in one of his Puri Musings episodes about how fame and wealth can slowly change people within the film industry. His observations once again sparked discussion about the growing sense of superiority that sometimes develops among celebrities after achieving success and popularity.
Veteran actor and producer Murali Mohan had earlier shared similar thoughts during a throwback interview on Open Heart With RK. Speaking candidly, he explained how some actors begin to see themselves as extraordinary individuals once they gain stardom, forgetting that their fame exists only because of the love and support of audiences.
Murali Mohan compared the culture of Bollywood with that of the South Indian film industry, particularly the Telugu film industry. He noted that in Mumbai, stars regularly attend award ceremonies like the Filmfare Awards or national-level events, even when they are not personally receiving awards. According to him, actors there often come together to appreciate and encourage fellow artists regardless of status or personal recognition.
The discussion also highlighted how legendary stars like Amitabh Bachchan are known for attending award functions simply to support and applaud the achievements of others. Murali Mohan felt that such humility and mutual respect help strengthen the overall film culture.
In contrast, he observed that many prestigious events in the Telugu film industry, including ceremonies like the Nandi Awards, often witness attendance mainly from those who are receiving awards. Many others reportedly stay away if they are not being personally honoured, reflecting a lack of unity and collective celebration within the industry.
Murali Mohan also admitted that during a certain phase of his own career, he too experienced moments of ego and illusion created by fame. However, he said he eventually understood the temporary nature of glamour and learned to remain grounded in reality.
According to him, true greatness for an artist lies not in fame or public adoration, but in humility, respect for fellow artists, and the ability to stay connected with ordinary people. He stressed that celebrities should actively participate in industry events and celebrate each other’s achievements instead of attending only when personal recognition is involved.
The veteran actor concluded by saying that stardom is never permanent, and only those who remain humble and emotionally connected with audiences can earn lasting respect and a permanent place in people’s hearts.
