After facing strong resistance from several opposition parties, particularly those from South India, over the issue of delimitation, the BJP-led NDA government is reportedly preparing to come up with a revised proposal. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has now indicated that a fresh Delimitation Bill will be introduced soon with provisions aimed at addressing concerns raised by various states.
According to Chandrababu Naidu, the proposed legislation will ensure a proportional increase of up to 50 percent in both Assembly and Lok Sabha seats across all states, including Andhra Pradesh. He also stated that the bill would incorporate provisions related to women’s reservation, making it a more comprehensive exercise.
If implemented, the move could significantly expand the strength of the Lok Sabha from the current 543 seats to nearly 850 seats, increasing representation for several states. However, the delimitation exercise has remained a sensitive issue, especially in southern states, where concerns have been raised that states in North India would gain a larger share of representation due to population growth, thereby reducing the relative influence of southern states.
This apprehension has led to opposition from several South Indian states, with Andhra Pradesh emerging as one of the few exceptions. Political observers believe that changing electoral equations in major states such as Tamil Nadu and West Bengal could influence the dynamics surrounding the bill when it is brought before Parliament again.
With the Centre expected to revisit the issue in the near future, the proposed Delimitation Bill is likely to trigger fresh political debates over representation, federal balance, and the future structure of Parliament.
