Naidu’s Kuppam Move Triggers Fresh Buzz

For years, YSR Congress leaders projected confidence about defeating Chandrababu Naidu in his political stronghold of Kuppam. During the previous regime, then minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy led an aggressive campaign in the constituency, and the party even succeeded in gaining control of several local bodies, fueling speculation that Kuppam was gradually slipping away from the TDP’s grip.

However, those predictions ultimately failed to materialize. In the 2024 Assembly elections, Chandrababu Naidu once again emerged victorious from Kuppam, securing his eighth consecutive win from the constituency and reaffirming his dominance in the region.

Ahead of the elections, TDP MLC Kancharla Srikanth had been entrusted with party affairs in Kuppam. His appointment came after he successfully won the East Rayalaseema Graduate MLC seat despite the challenging political environment under the YSR Congress government.

Yet, in a surprising development, Naidu recently relieved Srikanth of his responsibilities as Kuppam in-charge. The decision has sparked discussion within party circles, particularly because it comes at a crucial time with local body elections on the horizon.

According to party sources, dissatisfaction had been gradually building among second-tier leaders after the alliance government assumed office. Concerns reportedly centered around coordination issues and communication gaps between Srikanth and local leadership. Political observers point to differences among key leaders, including Kancharla Srikanth, P.S. Muniratnam, and Dr. Suresh Babu, which may have contributed to growing internal friction.

There were also complaints from grassroots workers who felt they were not receiving adequate recognition for their efforts. Several cadres reportedly expressed disappointment over their limited involvement in party activities and public programs despite working actively during the elections.

Adding to the developments, a team associated with political strategist Robin Sharma recently conducted an extensive survey across the Kuppam constituency. Over a period of nearly two weeks, the team interacted with voters, party workers, and local leaders at village, panchayat, and mandal levels to assess public sentiment, leadership performance, and satisfaction with government initiatives.

Soon after the survey was completed, Chandrababu Naidu convened a meeting and announced a significant organizational change. He declared that he would personally oversee Kuppam affairs and visit the constituency once every two months to maintain direct contact with party workers and the public.

At the same meeting, Naidu clarified that Kancharla Srikanth would continue to play a role in Kuppam affairs as his representative and advised party cadres to cooperate with him and follow his guidance.

Nevertheless, the timing of the move has generated uncertainty among sections of the cadre. With local body elections approaching, many party workers are closely watching how the leadership restructuring will impact the party’s strategy and organizational strength in one of the TDP’s most important constituencies.
