Amid growing concerns over crimes against women, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a major technological initiative aimed at strengthening public safety. Chief Minister Vijay has unveiled an ambitious drone-based surveillance program designed to enhance the protection of women across the state.
The move comes at a time when incidents of harassment, assault, and other crimes against women have sparked widespread debate and increased public demand for stronger preventive measures. Responding to these concerns, the government has decided to leverage advanced surveillance technology to improve monitoring and law enforcement capabilities.
Under the new initiative, Tamil Nadu will deploy a dedicated drone surveillance network using technology sourced from Singapore. The system is expected to assist authorities in monitoring sensitive areas, responding more quickly to incidents, and improving overall public safety infrastructure.
To support the project, the state government has allocated a substantial budget of ₹354 crore. The Tamil Nadu Police Department will also undergo specialized training to effectively operate and manage the drone-based monitoring system.
Officials believe the integration of advanced surveillance technology can help create a safer environment, particularly in areas identified as vulnerable or high-risk. Further details regarding implementation and operational protocols are expected to be announced in the coming months.
Interestingly, the initiative reflects a growing trend among state governments to adopt technology-driven policing solutions. While Andhra Pradesh has increasingly utilized drone surveillance to monitor drug-related activities and other law-and-order concerns, Tamil Nadu is now exploring the technology primarily as a tool to enhance women’s safety.
