Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his call for greater military self-reliance, urging the country to reduce its dependence on U.S. support and strengthen its domestic defence production capabilities.
Speaking to reserve officers during a training course in the occupied West Bank on June 18, Netanyahu said Israel should “break free from dependency” and develop an independent arms manufacturing network, while still expressing appreciation for American assistance. “We need our own independent armaments network. We must manufacture our own armaments,” he stated.
His remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and follow a reported U.S.–Iran preliminary understanding aimed at de-escalating conflict in the Middle East, a move that has drawn criticism within Israel.
Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has received over $300 billion in U.S. economic and military aid (inflation-adjusted), according to data from the Council on Foreign Relations, making it one of the largest recipients of American assistance globally.
