OpenAI has announced the appointment of Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy in one of its fastest-growing and most important global markets. Singh will join the AI giant in September and will become OpenAI’s most senior executive in India.

The company said Singh will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, and will lead OpenAI’s efforts to strengthen its presence across the country. His responsibilities will include driving consumer growth, accelerating enterprise adoption, building strategic partnerships, engaging with regulators, and overseeing the company’s operations in India.

OpenAI said Singh will play a key role in expanding collaborations with businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and the broader AI ecosystem as the company looks to make artificial intelligence more accessible across sectors.

Before joining OpenAI, Singh served as President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the ride-hailing company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.

The appointment reflects OpenAI’s growing commitment to India, which the company has identified as one of its top-priority markets for AI innovation and adoption. Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI has been steadily increasing its investments in the country through partnerships with businesses, developers, and research communities.

OpenAI established its first office in New Delhi in November 2025, further strengthening its presence in India. During the India AI Summit earlier this year, Sam Altman praised the country’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and its strong commitment to investing across the AI ecosystem.

Altman had described India’s progress in AI as “amazing,” highlighting the country’s focus on developing AI infrastructure, foundational models, and real-world applications. He also expressed confidence that India’s technology ecosystem is poised for an AI-driven entrepreneurial boom.

With Prabhjeet Singh set to take charge in September, OpenAI is positioning itself for its next phase of growth in India, with a strong focus on expanding AI adoption among consumers, enterprises, developers, and public institutions.
