The theatre issue surrounding Peddi in Telangana has once again become complicated, creating fresh tension in the Telugu film industry just ahead of the film’s release.
After initial discussions between producers, exhibitors, and distributors, the situation had seemed to settle down temporarily. However, the dispute has now resurfaced with renewed intensity.
For the past few weeks, Telangana exhibitors have been demanding the implementation of a percentage-based revenue-sharing system in single-screen theatres, replacing the existing rental model. On the other hand, producers are reportedly hesitant to introduce sudden changes for films that are already completed or nearing release.
Earlier, both sides had agreed to form a committee comprising representatives from producers, exhibitors, and distributors to find a mutually acceptable solution. This move had briefly eased tensions and raised hopes that Peddi would not face any release-related hurdles.
However, before the committee could submit its report, exhibitors once again addressed the media and reiterated their stand. They stated that Peddi will be screened in single-screen theatres only if the percentage system is implemented.
Exhibitors also claimed that multiple rounds of discussions had already taken place with the Telugu Film Chamber. According to them, the issue was expected to be resolved during the release window of Hari Hara Veera Mallu, but producers have allegedly delayed the decision for several months.
They further argued that theatre revenues, which were strong in the past, have significantly declined over time. While most regions across the country follow the percentage revenue model, Telangana still operates on the rental system, they pointed out.
With Peddi being one of the most anticipated big releases, the issue has once again escalated into a major industry concern, putting pressure on all stakeholders to arrive at a final resolution soon.
