S.S. Rajamouli has shared a major update on his highly anticipated film Varanasi, sending Mahesh Babu fans into excitement. The acclaimed filmmaker revealed that a significant portion of the shoot has already been completed, including all the film’s large-scale action sequences.
In an interview with Variety, Rajamouli said the team is now focusing on filming the smaller connecting scenes and hopes to wrap up production by September or early October.
“We have completed a major portion of the shoot. All the important big spectacle action sequences are done,” Rajamouli said.
The update has further heightened expectations for Varanasi, which stars Mahesh Babu alongside Priyanka Chopra. The film is being touted as Rajamouli’s most ambitious project to date.
According to reports, the story spans thousands of years and multiple locations, including Antarctica, with the holy city of Varanasi playing a central role in a narrative involving an impending asteroid threat.
Adding to its scale, the film is being partially shot on 70mm IMAX film. Rajamouli explained that the decision was not made to fit the IMAX format. Instead, the grandeur of the sequences naturally made IMAX the ideal medium. He admitted that framing scenes for both IMAX and CinemaScope required some initial adjustments, but the team quickly adapted to the workflow.
Apart from Varanasi, Rajamouli is also associated with Baahubali: The Eternal War, an animated expansion of the Baahubali universe directed by Ishan Shukla.
Speaking about the project, Rajamouli said the world of Baahubali already has a rich foundation, making it easier to expand into new stories. Once he was confident that Ishan Shukla understood the characters and the essence of the franchise, he gave the creative team the freedom to take the project forward.
Rajamouli also expressed his belief that animation is the perfect medium to expand the Baahubali universe, saying Indian mythology and storytelling are naturally suited to the limitless possibilities animation offers.
He added that emotion has always been the driving force behind the grand visuals in his films, with spectacle emerging organically from the emotional core of the story.
The director also welcomed the return of IMAX to Hyderabad, saying the city deserves a world-class IMAX theatre once again. He recalled that Hyderabad’s iconic Prasads IMAX once housed one of the finest 70mm IMAX projectors before the industry transitioned to digital projection.
With Varanasi targeting a 2027 theatrical release and IMAX making its comeback in Hyderabad, Rajamouli believes the timing couldn’t be better for delivering one of Indian cinema’s biggest visual experiences.
