Micron Technology is emerging as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global artificial intelligence boom, driven by surging demand for advanced memory and storage chips that power modern AI systems. At the helm of this semiconductor giant is Indian-origin CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, whose inspiring journey from multiple US visa rejections to leading a global tech powerhouse reflects a remarkable story of persistence and success in the technology world.

Born in Kanpur and raised in Delhi, Sanjay Mehrotra reportedly faced rejection three times while applying for a US student visa during the 1970s. Despite these early setbacks, he eventually moved to the United States for higher education, a decision that became the turning point in his career and laid the foundation for his future achievements in the semiconductor industry.

In 2017, Mehrotra took over as CEO of Micron Technology, one of the world’s leading memory and storage chip manufacturers. Under his leadership, the company has significantly strengthened its position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem, with a strong focus on next-generation computing, AI infrastructure, and cloud technologies. Prior to this, he co-founded SanDisk in 1998, a company that played a major role in popularizing flash storage technology worldwide before being acquired by Western Digital in a multi-billion-dollar deal.

As global demand for AI continues to rise, memory chips have become a critical component in powering AI servers, data centers, smartphones, and cloud computing platforms. Micron’s DRAM and NAND flash memory solutions are now widely used across these systems, making the company one of the key beneficiaries of the ongoing AI revolution and strengthening its position in the global semiconductor market.

Mehrotra has also expanded Micron’s footprint in India with a major semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This project stands as one of India’s largest semiconductor investments and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the country’s position in the global chip supply chain. He has previously noted that the facility could eventually produce “hundreds of millions of chips annually,” highlighting India’s growing importance in the global technology ecosystem.
