
ClickUp, the California-based productivity platform, has announced a major workforce restructuring as part of its shift toward an AI-first operating model. The company confirmed that nearly 22% of its employees will be laid off, but CEO Zeb Evans clarified that the move is not related to financial struggles or declining business performance.
In a detailed post on X, Evans explained that the restructuring is aimed at redefining how modern companies can function more efficiently with smaller teams powered by advanced AI systems and automation tools.
According to Evans, the decision is not primarily about reducing expenses. Instead, ClickUp plans to reinvest a significant portion of the savings into rewarding top-performing employees who can effectively build, manage, and scale AI-driven workflows.
He revealed that the company plans to introduce million-dollar salary bands for employees capable of creating “outsized impact” using AI technologies. Evans emphasized that traditional compensation structures based solely on job titles may soon become outdated in AI-centric organizations.
The CEO described the company’s future workforce model as a “100x organization,” where AI agents handle repetitive and technical tasks while humans focus on strategic oversight, decision-making, and system management.
Evans categorized the future workforce into three major groups — builders, system managers, and front-line operators. In engineering specifically, he believes the most valuable talent will be those who can orchestrate and supervise AI coding agents rather than manually performing every task themselves.
The announcement reflects a broader trend emerging across the global technology industry, where companies are increasingly reducing traditional roles while aggressively hiring AI specialists, automation experts, and high-level system architects with premium compensation packages.
Evans also stated that employees who successfully automate workflows using AI are more likely to remain valuable within organizations because they evolve into managers and owners of AI systems rather than being replaced by them.
As part of this transition, ClickUp intends to retain its strongest performers by offering significantly higher earning potential tied directly to AI-driven productivity and impact. The company believes future organizations will reward efficiency, innovation, and AI management capabilities more than conventional work structures.
Concluding his remarks, Evans said many companies are likely to adopt similar restructuring strategies in the coming years. According to him, the future of work is not necessarily about employing fewer people, but about creating entirely new roles centered around AI collaboration, automation management, and higher-value contributions.
