Samantha on Nepotism Debate

Before the nepotism debate became one of the biggest talking points in Indian cinema, Samantha Ruth Prabhu had shared a balanced perspective on the subject, emphasizing that both star kids and outsiders face different challenges in the film industry.
During her appearance on Koffee With Karan, host Karan Johar asked Samantha about the prevalence of film families in the Telugu industry and whether outsiders face an uphill battle compared to actors born into cinema backgrounds. He also pointed to Vijay Deverakonda as one of the few successful outsiders who managed to break through.
Responding thoughtfully, Samantha said that every actor has their own struggles, regardless of their background.
“Nepo kids, non-nepo kids, everyone comes with their own demons, and they have their own demons to face.”
When Karan Johar brought up the advantage of being born into a film family, Samantha acknowledged that star kids may get an early opportunity, but she also highlighted the enormous pressure that comes with carrying a famous surname.
She explained that while outsiders are free to learn and make mistakes away from the public eye, every success and failure of a star kid is scrutinized by audiences and the media alike.
Reflecting on her own journey, Samantha remarked that if she had failed when she entered the industry, only her immediate family would have known. In contrast, when a star kid stumbles, the entire country watches and judges.
Ultimately, Samantha stressed that neither privilege nor struggle can guarantee a successful career, as the audience has the final say.
“The ball is always in the audience’s court.”
Samantha made her acting debut with the Telugu blockbuster Ye Maaya Chesave in 2010 and quickly established herself as one of South India’s leading actresses. Over the years, she has delivered several successful films, including Dookudu, Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, Attarintiki Daredi, Kaththi, Theri, 24, Mersal and Rangasthalam, earning widespread acclaim for her performances across Telugu and Tamil cinema.
