On the second day of the TDP Mahanadu, the Telugu Desam Party unanimously passed a resolution demanding that former Chief Minister and party founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) be conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
TDP chief and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu stated that awarding the Bharat Ratna to NTR, who remains a symbol of Telugu pride and self-respect, reflects the sentiment of the entire Telugu community. The Mahanadu further observed that it would be a fitting tribute to a leader who rendered exceptional services to both the state and the nation.
Many within the party and among NTR admirers believe this is the right time to push for the honour, given the current political equation at the Centre, where the NDA government relies on the support of the TDP. Some also feel that such an opportunity may not arise again in the near future.
However, if the Bharat Ratna is awarded posthumously, established protocol suggests that it would be received by the spouse of the recipient from the President of India. In NTR’s case, this would mean Lakshmi Parvathi receiving the honour, a prospect that has sparked emotional discomfort among a section of his followers, considering the controversies surrounding his final years.
This remains one of the sensitive aspects in the ongoing discussion around the demand for NTR’s Bharat Ratna.
