An 18-year-old Indian tourist tragically lost his life after a horse-drawn carriage overturned in Central Park, New York, on Wednesday, turning a family vacation into a heartbreaking incident.

The victim has been identified by police as Romanch Mahajan, who was visiting the United States along with his parents and younger brother. The accident occurred around 2:47 pm near Cherry Hill and Bethesda Fountain, one of the park’s most crowded tourist spots.

According to preliminary reports, the family had stopped during their carriage ride to take photographs when the horse suddenly became startled and bolted. The carriage then sped uncontrollably along the pathway before overturning, resulting in fatal injuries to the teenager.

Investigators said the carriage driver had briefly stepped away from the vehicle to take a photograph of the family at the time of the incident. Authorities and labour representatives have pointed out that leaving a carriage unattended violates established safety regulations.

A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events and any potential lapses in safety protocols.
