Who truly controls the Trinamool Congress? That question has emerged as the biggest political debate in West Bengal following an unprecedented crisis within the party.
What seemed unthinkable just months ago has now evolved into a fierce battle for control of the Trinamool Congress. The party’s recent electoral setback has dramatically altered the political landscape, weakening the authority of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and triggering a major internal power struggle.
The defeat was not merely about losing seats. It also sparked a series of defections that significantly eroded Mamata’s influence over the party organization. The situation worsened when a substantial number of Trinamool legislators reportedly shifted their allegiance away from her camp, reshaping the party’s internal equations almost overnight.
Sensing an opportunity, the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee intensified its challenge. The group reportedly removed Mamata Banerjee from the party chairperson position and announced a new leadership structure, escalating the confrontation to an entirely new level.
However, Mamata’s camp remains defiant and has approached the Election Commission with its own claim, arguing that the rebel group represents only a minority faction. Both camps are now asserting ownership of the party, its organizational structure, and its iconic election symbol.
The ultimate decision now rests with the Election Commission. In cases involving a split within a recognized political party, the Commission applies the “twin test,” evaluating both legislative strength and organizational support before determining which faction is entitled to official recognition.
This framework has played a crucial role in several major political disputes in recent years. The verdicts in the Shiv Sena and NCP split cases demonstrated that numerical strength often becomes a decisive factor in such battles.
At present, the rebel faction appears to have an advantage in terms of numbers. Nevertheless, the legal and political contest is far from settled. Until the Election Commission delivers its verdict, the fight for the Trinamool Congress name, symbol, assets, and future direction is expected to continue with full intensity.
