Apple is just days away from hosting its annual developer conference, WWDC 2026, where the company is expected to unveil major Artificial Intelligence (AI)-focused updates. As anticipation builds, fresh reports suggest new details about Apple’s evolving AI strategy, including deeper collaborations with Google and the possible use of Nvidia-powered infrastructure.
According to a report by The Information, Apple may shift its focus toward strengthening the core foundation of its AI systems rather than introducing only consumer-facing features. A key part of this strategy reportedly involves expanding on-device processing capabilities and improving how AI functions directly on iPhones and Macs.
One of the most notable developments is Apple’s reported use of a “distillation” process, where a version of Google’s Gemini large language model could be used to train Apple’s own smaller models. These models are expected to run efficiently on devices, reducing dependence on cloud-based systems while improving speed and privacy.
The report also suggests that Apple is exploring acquisitions, including talks with a Cambridge-based AI company, Liquid AI, to enhance its on-device AI capabilities. This move aligns with Apple’s broader goal of developing lightweight AI models that can operate directly on consumer devices.
Despite this push toward on-device intelligence, most heavy AI processing is still expected to rely on cloud infrastructure due to computational demands. Apple may continue leveraging external cloud partners, with Google Cloud playing a key role in powering advanced services. Additionally, Nvidia’s chips could be used for high-performance AI workloads, particularly through its “confidential computing” technology.
The upcoming version of Siri is also expected to be significantly upgraded, potentially running on Google Cloud and utilizing a licensed version of Google’s Gemini model for enhanced performance. At the same time, Apple will continue using its own “Private Cloud Compute” system for select Apple Intelligence features, ensuring privacy-focused processing remains a core priority.
