The Central government has launched an investigation into reports that sensitive information related to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series was exposed following a cyberattack on Tata Electronics.

Responding to the reports, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishnan said, “We are investigating,” confirming that the Centre is examining the alleged data breach.

According to reports, files reportedly stolen by a ransomware group from Tata Electronics surfaced on the dark web, allegedly containing confidential details about Apple’s unreleased iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The leaked material is said to include supplier information, component lists, and photographs linked to the devices.

The documents reportedly reveal details of key hardware components, including chips used on the main logic board, battery parts, and camera modules. They are also believed to identify Apple’s supplier network, showing which components are sourced from multiple vendors and which rely on a limited number of manufacturers.

If verified, the breach could expose aspects of Apple’s closely guarded global supply chain, potentially providing valuable insights to competitors, counterfeiters, or others seeking to understand the company’s procurement strategy.

The incident also comes at a crucial time for Tata Electronics, which has emerged as one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners as the tech giant continues expanding production in India. Besides supplying components, Tata Electronics also assembles iPhones under contract.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September. The reported leak has surfaced ahead of the anticipated launch, adding to concerns over the security of the company’s supply chain and confidential product information.

For now, the Centre has said it is investigating the matter, while neither Apple nor Tata Electronics has publicly commented on the reported leak.
