OpenAI’s ChatGPT, launched in 2022 as a breakthrough generative AI tool, quickly rose to global popularity and amassed millions of users within a short span of time. However, after years of dominating the AI assistant space, the platform is now showing signs of slowing dominance as its market share falls below 50% for the first time, according to Sensor Tower’s State of AI Report 2026, cited by TechCrunch.
Despite increasing competition, ChatGPT continues to remain the world’s most widely used AI assistant, with over 1.1 billion monthly users. However, the report indicates that its market share has declined to 46.4% by the end of May. Meanwhile, competitors such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude are steadily gaining ground, holding 27.7% and 10.3% market share respectively. Other players like Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI continue to operate below the 5% mark individually.
In terms of user base, Gemini reportedly has around 662 million monthly users, while Claude has approximately 245 million users, highlighting the rapid expansion of rival AI platforms. The report also notes a key behavioral shift among users, who are no longer relying on a single AI assistant. Instead, they are switching between tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude depending on specific tasks and features.
AI applications are expected to reach nearly 2.3 billion downloads in the first half of 2026, generating over $4.2 billion in consumer spending during the same period. For comparison, consumer spending on AI apps stood at around $1.83 billion in the first half of the previous year. However, the report suggests that overall market growth is beginning to stabilize.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly exploring new strategies to sustain its position in the evolving AI landscape. The company is said to be introducing advertisements within ChatGPT as a new revenue stream, while also strengthening its enterprise-focused offerings. Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly developing a “super app” version of ChatGPT, which is expected to integrate expanded features and services beyond its current capabilities.
