WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new “view-once” feature for text messages on iPhone, expanding its existing privacy tools. The feature is expected to function similarly to the current view-once option available for photos, videos, and voice notes, allowing users to send text messages that disappear after being opened once.
According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is developing this feature as part of its enhanced privacy upgrades. While there is no official rollout timeline yet, it is currently being tested for iOS users and may be introduced in a future update.
At present, users who want to send temporary text messages often rely on indirect methods, such as sharing screenshots via view-once images. The new feature would eliminate such workarounds by allowing disappearing text messages directly within chats.
As per the report, the feature could be activated by long-pressing the send button after typing a message. A new option labeled “Send as view once” may appear, enabling users to send messages that can only be viewed once by the recipient. Once opened, the message would automatically be locked and cannot be viewed again.
The feature is expected to work in individual chats as well as group conversations, although it may not be available for WhatsApp Channels. Similar to other view-once media, users will not be able to copy, forward, save, or share these messages. Screenshots and screen recordings may also be restricted within the app.
This new addition could be particularly useful for sharing sensitive information such as passwords, one-time codes, or personal details, offering an extra layer of privacy for users.
Although still under development, beta testing suggests that WhatsApp may roll out the feature soon for iPhone users.
