One of the most anticipated films in recent times has been Drishyam 3 starring Mohanlal in the lead role. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film generated massive buzz even before release for multiple reasons.
Unlike the previous installments, the makers decided to release the film directly in multiple South Indian languages instead of allowing remakes immediately. This decision reportedly even led to legal discussions involving a major OTT platform. Along with that, the strong advance bookings created huge expectations that the film could open to record-breaking numbers across South India.
However, the initial response after release has turned out to be mixed. While audiences in Kerala seem to have embraced the film positively, the reception in Telugu, Kannada, and other markets has been comparatively underwhelming. Despite the mixed talk, the film managed to collect nearly ₹40 crore gross during its opening weekend in Kerala after releasing on Thursday, showcasing the franchise’s strong pull in its home state.
In contrast, the performance in other South states has reportedly been disappointing. In the Telugu states alone, the film is said to have collected only around ₹3 crore gross over the first weekend, which is considered quite low for a sequel belonging to a blockbuster franchise like Drishyam.
Trade circles believe multiple factors may have impacted the film’s performance outside Kerala. The intense summer heat has affected theatre footfalls during daytime shows, while the ongoing IPL season continues to dominate evening entertainment. Moreover, audiences are currently looking for more fast-paced commercial entertainers, which may have limited the film’s reach among non-Malayalam viewers.
While the Kerala collections have reportedly brought relief to the makers, the weak numbers from other regions have come as a surprise to many in the trade. Even a highly popular franchise like Drishyam appears to be struggling against changing audience preferences and strong competition from cricket entertainment.
