Janhvi Kapoor’s Glam vs Performance Debate in Telugu Cinema

Share

There are generally two common paths that many heroines in the Telugu film industry tend to follow after their entry. One approach is to take up glamorous roles, where they add energy to the narrative mainly through songs, stylish appearances, and performance-driven glamour sequences. Actresses like Simran, Trisha, Kajal Aggarwal, and Samantha have followed this route, while newer names like Bhagyashree Borse and Sreeleela are also seen moving in a similar direction.

The second approach is to focus on strong character-driven roles, where performance takes priority over glamour, as seen in the choices of actresses like Keerthy Suresh and Sai Pallavi. These roles often avoid excessive glamour and instead emphasize storytelling and emotional depth, sometimes blending both depending on the film’s requirement.

Janhvi Kapoor’s journey, however, has been widely discussed in this context. While she initially aimed for more performance-oriented roles in Bollywood, she has yet to deliver a major breakthrough there. Later, her social media presence and glamorous photoshoots positioned her differently in the public eye.

Her Telugu debut with Jr NTR’s Devara, especially the song Chuttamalle, brought her significant attention in the glamour space. In her recent film Peddi as well, her character and presentation drew strong reactions, with some criticism over the heavy emphasis on glamour-driven portrayal.

Being the daughter of legendary actress Sridevi, expectations around Janhvi have always been high. However, audiences today tend to view her more as a glamour-focused star rather than comparing her directly to her mother’s legacy.

Amid ongoing discussions, questions remain about whether she will continue with similar glamorous roles or shift towards more performance-oriented characters in Telugu cinema. Another point of debate is her reported remuneration, which is said to be in the ₹6 crore range. Industry observers note that higher pay often comes with commercial expectations, while more content-driven roles in regional cinema may offer lower fees but stronger creative scope.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen which direction Janhvi Kapoor chooses as she continues her journey in Indian cinema.
