Telugu Desam Party’s prestigious annual event, Mahanadu, is set to take place in a completely different format this year. Instead of hosting the large-scale gathering physically, party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has reportedly decided to conduct the event online as part of fuel conservation measures.
Traditionally held on May 27 and 28 every year, Mahanadu witnesses massive participation from party workers and leaders across Andhra Pradesh. Last year’s event was organized in Kadapa, the home district of Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, while Nellore was initially finalized as this year’s venue.
However, the changing global situation and the ongoing tensions in West Asia are said to have prompted the TDP leadership to reconsider the scale of the celebrations. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasizing fuel-saving initiatives, Chandrababu reportedly opted for a virtual format to reduce large-scale travel and fuel usage.
According to the new plan, only Politburo members will attend directly from NTR Bhavan in Mangalagiri, while the speeches and programs will be streamed live to party cadres across the state through giant screens.
Interestingly, the party is planning special arrangements in nearly 1,845 clusters throughout Andhra Pradesh so that workers can participate from their respective regions. Leaders believe this approach will help conserve resources without affecting the spirit and reach of Mahanadu celebrations.
The sudden shift reportedly came as a surprise because preparations for the grand physical event in Nellore had already begun. However, following the leadership’s latest instructions, venue-related works were halted abruptly by Friday evening.
Notably, leaders from YSR Congress Party had earlier mocked the idea of scaling down Mahanadu in the name of fuel conservation, questioning whether Chandrababu would really reduce the scale of such a prestigious party event. But with the official announcement of the online format, the TDP leadership has now turned the criticism into a political counterattack.
