OpenAI is expanding the reach of its advanced AI coding assistant, Codex, by bringing the feature to the ChatGPT mobile app. The latest integration will allow users to manage AI-powered coding tasks directly from their smartphones, making it easier to stay connected to development workflows while on the move.
The feature is currently rolling out in preview mode for both Android and iOS users. With this update, users can track task progress, review outputs, approve actions, switch AI models, and even launch new coding requests straight from the mobile app. The company says the feature is especially useful for long-running coding tasks that usually take hours to complete.
Originally designed for desktop environments, Codex enables developers to write, debug, review, and manage AI-assisted coding projects while collaborating with multiple AI agents simultaneously. With mobile integration, the ChatGPT app now acts as a remote control hub for those ongoing workflows.
OpenAI clarified that the actual coding process still runs on the user’s desktop, laptop, or cloud server. Sensitive files, permissions, credentials, and development environments remain securely stored on those systems and are not transferred to the smartphone. Instead, the mobile app simply mirrors live updates such as screenshots, terminal activity, code edits, and testing results in real time.
Codex on mobile can also investigate bugs, access project files, run tests, and even attempt automatic fixes when permitted. In certain cases, it may request user approval before carrying out specific actions.
Apart from coding support, Codex can generate quick summaries of ongoing work, highlight unresolved issues, and compile updates from tools like Slack, emails, documents, and browser sessions. The summaries can refresh dynamically as new information becomes available.
The Codex preview is being rolled out to ChatGPT users across all subscription tiers, including Free and Go plans, on both Android and iOS devices.
