OpenAI is reportedly considering a significant reduction in the pricing of its ChatGPT subscription plans, API access for developers, and other paid AI services, as competition in the artificial intelligence space intensifies.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the company is evaluating major cuts in token pricing—a system used to measure AI usage and calculate costs. Rival AI firm Anthropic is also expected to consider similar pricing adjustments, potentially triggering a broader price competition in the industry. Such reductions could benefit developers, startups, and businesses that rely on AI models to build products and services.
Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the rising cost of running advanced AI systems and emphasized the need for sustainable value delivery. He noted that future strategies would focus on helping users “get more value for less spend,” highlighting the growing pressure to balance performance with affordability. However, this shift has also raised concerns around “tokenmaxxing,” where companies maximize AI usage while spending heavily on AI tools.
While lower pricing could expand access and attract more users to platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, it may also impact profit margins for both OpenAI and Anthropic. Reports suggest that both companies are already incurring massive costs related to computing power, specialized chips, electricity, and data center infrastructure required to operate large-scale AI models.
OpenAI is increasingly focusing on enterprise customers and is reportedly planning to transform ChatGPT into a “super app” integrating services like image generation, Codex, and more. Meanwhile, Anthropic has gained strong traction in the enterprise segment with its coding assistant Claude Code and recently surpassed OpenAI in valuation at $965 billion.
If implemented, OpenAI’s pricing cuts could spark a broader price war in the AI industry, while also testing how effectively these companies can maintain revenue growth amid soaring operational costs.
