On her final day as Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard released what she described as newly declassified and previously unseen documents and communications alleging serious misconduct related to the origins and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Gabbard, the materials suggest that Dr. Anthony Fauci was involved in funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology using US taxpayer money, influencing intelligence assessments on the virus’s origins, and providing misleading testimony to Congress in 2024.
In a post on X accompanied by a video statement, Gabbard said Fauci worked with elements within the intelligence community to suppress discussions around a possible lab-leak origin of COVID-19 and promote a natural-origin narrative. She further alleged that he lied under oath during congressional testimony.
The documents, released after a year-long declassification review under what Gabbard described as a “maximum transparency” directive, outline three key areas of concern. First, Fauci is alleged to have directed funding toward gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, which some researchers believe could be linked to the emergence of the virus. Second, he is accused of influencing intelligence assessments through advisers and scientific networks aligned with his views. Third, he is said to have played a prominent public role during the pandemic, shaping messaging that critics now describe as misleading.
The release also alleges the existence of a “circular reporting loop,” in which NIAID-funded scientists influenced intelligence assessments, which were later cited as independent validation of the natural-origin theory. According to the documents, dissenting scientists who supported the lab-leak hypothesis were reportedly excluded from key discussions.
The most serious allegation concerns Fauci’s 2024 testimony before a House subcommittee, during which he reportedly denied communicating with US intelligence agencies about COVID-19 origins. Gabbard claims the newly released documents contradict those statements, suggesting regular communication between Fauci and intelligence officials.
The declassification package also includes whistleblower accounts alleging retaliation against intelligence community personnel who challenged the official narrative. Some reportedly faced termination or career setbacks after raising concerns about COVID-19’s origins, while internal processes for anonymous reporting were allegedly restricted.
Gabbard said the findings highlight the need for transparency and accountability, stating that the American people deserve the full truth after years of conflicting narratives and alleged suppression of alternative viewpoints.
Fauci has not publicly responded to the latest release, and the documents have been made available through the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s official portal.
