WhatsApp iPad Gets Standalone Support

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a significant update for iPad users that allows them to register and use their accounts directly on the tablet without needing to link it to an iPhone or Android smartphone. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being introduced gradually with WhatsApp for iPadOS version 26.25.74.

Until now, WhatsApp on iPad worked only in companion mode, requiring users to scan a QR code from their primary phone. While the feature allowed users to access chats on the tablet, it came with several limitations. Companion mode did not support features such as live location sharing, broadcast lists, and business interactions through WhatsApp Flows. In addition, if users did not open WhatsApp on their primary phone for 14 consecutive days, all linked companion devices, including the iPad, were automatically logged out.

With the latest update, eligible users can set up WhatsApp on the iPad as a primary device, just like they would on a smartphone. The setup process requires entering a phone number and country code, followed by verification through a six-digit code. Users who have already enabled a passkey for their WhatsApp account can use it instead of the verification code.

Once configured as a primary device, the iPad gains access to features that were previously unavailable in companion mode. Users can share live location, manage broadcast lists, interact with businesses using WhatsApp Flows, and continue using the app without depending on activity from another device.

WhatsApp is not removing companion mode. Users who prefer to keep their smartphone as the primary device can continue using the existing setup. During installation, users will be given the option to choose whether to use the iPad as a primary device or as a companion device. Those who have already linked their iPad as a companion device do not need to make any changes.

The feature is currently being rolled out to select users and is expected to become available to more accounts in the coming weeks, offering iPad users greater flexibility and a more independent WhatsApp experience.
