WhatsApp is preparing to roll out one of its most-awaited privacy features by introducing usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Ahead of the wider rollout, the messaging platform is encouraging users to reserve their preferred usernames before they are taken by someone else.
The feature is aimed at enhancing user privacy, especially while interacting with people who do not already have a user’s phone number. Instead of exchanging contact numbers, users will be able to connect using a unique username.
To create a username, WhatsApp has introduced a few rules. The username must be between 3 and 35 characters long and can include lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.) and underscores (_). Every username must contain at least one letter, while spaces, special symbols, and terms such as “www”, “.com”, and “.net” are not allowed.
Once the feature becomes available, users can reserve a username by updating WhatsApp to the latest version from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. They can then open the app, navigate to Settings, select Account, tap Username, and choose an available username.
According to WhatsApp, people who do not have a user’s phone number saved will be able to see the username in direct chats, group conversations, and calls. The username will appear with an “@” prefix to distinguish it from the display name and phone number. However, contacts who have already saved the user’s number will continue to see the saved contact name and phone number.
Users will also be able to share their username through a QR code or a direct link, making it easier to connect while keeping their phone number private.
WhatsApp has clarified that using a username is completely optional. Users can change or delete their username at any time. However, if the username is removed, the user’s phone number will once again become visible to people they communicate with on the platform.
The feature is expected to roll out gradually over the coming weeks, offering users an additional layer of privacy and a more secure way to connect with others.
