Mohanlal-Mammootty’s ‘Patriot’ Struggles at Box Office
The much-hyped Malayalam spy action thriller Patriot, starring Mohanlal and Mammootty, has failed to live up to expectations at the box office despite registering a strong opening.
Touted as one of the most expensive films ever made in Malayalam cinema, Patriot needed sustained momentum after its grand start. However, the film witnessed a sharp drop in collections due to mixed-to-negative word of mouth, turning into a major disappointment worldwide.
According to trade reports, the film collected around Rs 1.5 crore net in India on its first Tuesday, taking its five-day India net total to approximately Rs 24.85 crore. Its India gross currently stands at around Rs 29.32 crore.
In overseas markets, the film has reportedly earned close to Rs 41.5 crore gross so far. With this, the worldwide gross total has reached nearly Rs 70.82 crore.
Given the scale, star power, and massive pre-release buzz surrounding Patriot, the film was initially expected to comfortably enter the list of the top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time. However, the poor theatrical trend has significantly damaged those chances.
At the current pace, the film is now struggling to maintain momentum and may even fail to cross the prestigious Rs 100 crore mark globally.
