At WWDC 2026, Apple rolled out the first developer beta of iOS 27, introducing major updates across the UI, Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, and more. As developers began exploring the update, several intriguing hidden references surfaced—fueling speculation about Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone.
According to a Bloomberg report, developers discovered concealed code and system files within the iOS 27 beta that appear to hint at internal testing for a foldable device. Software researcher M1Astra reportedly identified strings such as “foldState,” “mechanicalAngleDegrees,” and “angleDegrees,” which suggest the system is designed to detect whether a device is closed, partially open, or fully unfolded, and adjust the interface accordingly.
The findings also point to possible repair tools and multi-display support, further strengthening speculation that Apple is preparing software infrastructure for a foldable iPhone experience.
Alongside these hints, Apple showcased new iOS 27 features tailored for wider, iPad-like usage on iPhones. These include full-screen widgets for native apps, allowing expanded interactive experiences. In macOS 27, Apple also enhanced iPhone Mirroring on Macs, enabling users to resize the mirrored screen into a wider, more flexible format.
Additionally, Apple introduced a new App Adaptability framework aimed at helping developers design apps that seamlessly adjust across multiple display formats—another indication that the company may be preparing for foldable hardware.
While these developments remain speculative, multiple leaks suggest Apple could unveil its first foldable iPhone as early as September 2026, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. For now, the clues found in iOS 27 have only intensified anticipation, but official confirmation is still awaited.
