Sai Pallavi to Portray M.S. Subbulakshmi in Ambitious Biopic
May 5, 2026

Sai Pallavi, who recently made her Hindi debut, has now moved on to what is being described as her most ambitious project yet. She will be portraying Bharat Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biopic based on the legendary Carnatic vocalist.
For this role, Sai Pallavi has taken up intensive training in classical Carnatic music from scratch. Reports suggest that she will be performing her own vocals in the film, aiming to bring maximum authenticity to the character. The transformation is being seen as one of the most challenging preparations in her career so far.
Actor Aamir Khan, who himself has been learning Hindustani classical music for the past couple of years, reportedly remarked that Carnatic music is even more demanding. He praised Sai Pallavi’s commitment, saying she is taking on a difficult challenge with confidence and determination.
Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan also commented on the trend of actors singing for themselves in biopics. She noted that in earlier times, established playback legends like Lata Mangeshkar made it unnecessary for actors to sing their own parts, unlike today where performers are attempting live vocals for authenticity. She appreciated Sai Pallavi’s effort, calling it a brave move.
Classical playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy also supported the decision, stating that an actor singing for herself can enhance realism, especially in biopics where emotional authenticity matters more than technical perfection.
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is reportedly planning a biopic on Lata Mangeshkar, also praised the attempt, saying that capturing the voice of such legendary singers is one of the biggest challenges in musical biopics.
However, Sai Pallavi’s recent Hindi film Ek Din did not perform strongly at the box office, despite her performance receiving appreciation. Following this, discussions have emerged about her next Hindi project Ramayana, where she stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor as Sita.
Reports also suggest that due to feedback on her Hindi diction in her debut film, her voice may be dubbed in Ramayana, while she continues to focus on performance and expression. Despite setbacks, Sai Pallavi’s dedication to taking on challenging roles continues to keep her in the spotlight.
