Amid ongoing speculation surrounding Deepika Padukone’s future in Kalki 2, industry insiders believe replacing the Bollywood superstar may not be as straightforward as many assume. According to those familiar with the project, Deepika’s character, Sumathi, is far more than just another role in the film’s universe.

“Sumathi is the woman carrying Lord Kalki and serves as the emotional and narrative core of the franchise. The entire conflict revolves around either protecting or capturing her, making the character indispensable to the sequel as well,” says a producer associated with the industry.

Sources point out that finding a replacement is not merely about casting a popular actress. The role requires someone with exceptional acting ability, commanding screen presence, and pan-India appeal — a combination that only a handful of actresses currently possess.

Deepika Padukone’s presence was one of the biggest strengths of Kalki 2898 AD. Alongside Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, she helped give the film a truly national reach. Coming off the massive success of Pathaan and Jawan, Deepika was at the peak of her popularity when the film hit theatres.
